The rocky foreshore is a world of diverse animal and plant communities, ancient architecture and intricate gardens. It is a world of contrasts and extremes. A salty dry rocky ledge stretching out endlessly and peacefully in the warmth of the sun for hours is transformed into a cool, swirling, crashing flooded environment within minutes as the sea encroaches - temporarily wreaking havoc before gently subsiding once more. A pattern that has continued over millions of years. The gentle occupants of the rocks, crevices and pools quietly and calmly go about their daily activities next to the remains of those that lived before - shells and skeletons embedded in the ancient walls and floors of sandstone cities. Gardens of colour, visible through the shallow depths, are constantly replenished with fresh moisture and nutrients - washing, feeding and regenerating. With every new tide there comes a transformation as rockpool life washes and crawls to new destinations. The sand ripples of yesterday are replaced with with swirling grainy patterns of today and everyday the pattern is different. The sea is the architect of the great sandstone cities of tomorrow as it flows and grinds its way around the foreshore, tirelessly moulding the walls, blocks and holes that will become the homes of many a small sea creature. Amidst all this activity, there is stillness, intense stillness. An opportunity for contemplation and appreciation for the endurance, persistence and timelessness of this diverse and intricate environment. ... Most of my rockpool images are traditional photography. I get up close and personal with the foreshore critters in an attempt to give them personality or create an insight into their lives. I enjoy the texture, patterns and colours present in this environment often not noticed from a standing position. I find that the myriad of shapes, patterns and colour combinations found in rockpools are fantastic for abstract design. The image Surreal Pool has undergone extensive work using graphics software to bring out the colour and create the level of surrealism, the rushing tide creating movement in this image. In other images, such as Coloured Sands and Coloured Pool, I have used shadow and reflection to add colour. Back to Art Gallery | ||||||||||||||||||
